Major mayor choices

Street Smarts

County Commissioner Amy Lathen and Attorney General John Suthers have announced their intentions to run for Colorado Springs mayor. Former mayor Mary Lou Makepeace may jump into the race, too.

How would you rate your level of interest in city politics? It's pretty low. With local politics, you don't hear as much about the progress they've made as the trouble they get into.

To what extent do you care who will be the next mayor? Not very much. But I read about the female who's running, and that's pretty cool.

What do you think is the most important quality in a mayor? To have a relationship with the locals. Local people want to be heard; that's why they vote.

If you were mayor, what's the first change you would make? I'd like to see the petty laws and rules get changed. You get fined if you ride your bike on the sidewalk, but I've been hit by cars three times when I was riding my bike legally in the street.

How would you rate your interest in city politics? I'm interested in what's going on. I grew up here, and I like how things are starting to build up downtown.

Do you give the mayor any credit for that? No. I think he's cut off from the community and more interested in big business.

What do you think is the most important quality in a mayor? Having a sense of community, and knowing people and being one of those people.

How do you feel this city is doing overall? I think it's slowly moving in the right direction. If we got someone more progressive it would move faster.

If you were mayor, what's the first change you would make? I would start with making sure businesses came back to downtown and the west side, instead of pushing outward.

Do you care about who will be our next mayor? After our current one, I'd have to say I care more. I wanted [Richard] Skorman to win last time.

What's the most important quality in a mayor? Someone who cares about all parties great and small, and not just business interests.

How do you feel the city is currently doing overall? It feels pretty strong to me. Real estate is rising and I think people are out more and spending more. It feels positive.

As mayor, what's the first change you'd make? I'd reallocate resources, and spend more for the homeless and mentally disturbed, at least on some level.
