Re: “Marijuana 'incidents' on the rise at Manitou Springs High School

I attended Manitou in the 90's. Not a day went by without students, good and bad, mentioning pot. Sometimes it was a joke, sometimes a comment on something they saw on t.v. or a movie, discussions about what they learned in health class, and occasionally, I'm sure, some were planning their weekends. It was commonplace, but no one interpreted the mention of pot as a cause for major concern. Today, one cannot make it through the day without hearing or seeing a story about pot on every news station, radio station, newspaper, etc. Do we then assume that everyone in the media and those that subscribe should be suspected of partaking simply because they're talking about one of the hottest topics of today? I would encourage school administrators not to overreact but rather spend the energy observing their students - are grades dropping? Attendance? Is there a decline in participation? Student morale? If there is a change in the students and their behaviors, then there is cause for concern.
