Mass Sit-In

When: Sat., April 9, 9:30 a.m. 2016

The name "Mass Sit-in to Protest Colorado Springs' Systematic Attempts to Criminalize the Homeless," facilitated by The Coalition for Compassion and Action, says it all. The peaceful protest, one of several held by the group, is in response the city's adoption of the Pedestrian Access Act, commonly known as the "sit-lie" ordinance, that essentially bans sitting and lying on anything deemed a sidewalk in downtown and on the west side. The law goes into full effect today. The controversial decision is one of many that have spurred local groups and activists to demonstrate against city policies — the pro-cannabis club/marijuana and pro-refugee folks are none too happy either, and that doesn't include the Broadmoor land swap deal crowds. So if you want to get involved and see what community activism actually looks like, there couldn't be a better time to do so. Demonstration begins at 9 a.m., Acacia Park, 115 E. Platte Ave., more details via CCA's facebook page. — Craig Lemley
