Re: “John-Alex Mason: gone too soon

I had the pleasure of meeting John Alex when we shared a condo for the Telluride Blues and Brews festival. He invited me to come to his show that evening at the Fly me to the Moon Saloon where he was performing a pre-festival show solo. The Moon has a reputation of drawing a high energy crowd, and here was John Alex playing solo with his cigar box two-string guitar and foot percussion setup. Within the first two songs of his set, he brought a packed house to their feet and played till the place was sweating hot. Song after song, he played his music, played his heart and soul. The guy had me stunned as to how he could get such a sound out of so little. But his voice, as large as he was in height, and his talent on his instruments were matched by an obviously God-given talent for playing the blues. And he obviously loved it. I ran into him a couple other times in Telluride the following years at the festival, and he always took the time to say hello, share his latest news on his music career, and spend some time talking. He will be missed greatly by many. My condolences to his family, especially his wife and children whom he always talked about with a smile.
