Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt just more sugary froyo

This rather large froyo chain just a month ago saw a new location spring up off Powers and Dublin boulevards. I can’t say what distinguishes it from every other self-serve froyo spot (oh looky! A mosaic tile backsplash, mommy!)— or why froyo joints continue to multiply.

But here we are, again, making a swirly mess over some tiny sample cups and our fingertips, finally settling on a saccharine dose of mixed Mudslide Pie and sugar-free Pecan Praline Surprise (nothing surprised us; it’s all there in the name).

The “live & active cultures” tag doesn’t convince us there’s a lot of healthfulness to be had when we’re talking low-fat frozen yogurt that may have no high fructose corn syrup (in the pecan praline’s case) or artificial colors (in either’s case) — which says nothing of artificial flavors. But this is dessert after all, so whatever, and the Mudslide does have real Oreos and coffee, which show up notably in the taste.

If you do happen to be missing artificial colors, from the expansive toppings bar, just grab Mother’s Circus Animal Cookies or horridly cloying cake balls that look like fish eyeballs. Crumbled almonds make a more modest choice.

The house spoons are neat and sturdy (easily repurposed for backpacking trips) and free temp tattoos at the register are fun for kids (or, ahem, us).
