Re: “Tragic lesson for all of us

"Rich, your story was excellent. It shows courage and sensitivity and as usual is written brilliantly. A fear-based mentality is what causes and attracts violence. Perhaps your critics need to meditate to allay their own fears and bilious systems." I would disagree with the idea that a "fear-based mentality causes and attracts violence" in this case. If we look at the trends as of late with the rash of home invasions, it's entirely understandable that people are indeed fearful of such things happening to them. That's reality. It would be a wonderful state of affairs if we could all live together in harmony without the fear that someone with malicious intent will not bust through your door in order to cause harm. But, that's not the world we all live in, and that's why we have an inherent right to defend ourselves. However, that being said, this occurrence does highlight one very real flaw in gun ownership: that the laws in place and the humans subject to them are far from perfect, and unfortunate and tragic things are a result. This tragic killing is understandable, but not necessarily justifiable. As for me, I've been "meditating" on this subject as a practicing Buddhist for over a quarter century. Even Buddhism shows that one must live in accordance to the world that one lives in. It's only common sense. What do you think the genesis of the various forms of Kung Fu was? It was the need to defend themselves from bandits and corrupt government officials and their soldiers.
