Relocated a couple years ago from its original spot off Platte Avenue, Mi Viejo San Juan remains one of the few places locally to nab authentic Puerto Rican fare. They have poor street visibility in this new spot and an undersized sign, but once you find and enter the door, a large, dimly lit, kitsch-filled dining room awaits. As do lots of colorful placemats and sticky tables and floors. Given that our cloying and oddly sour tres leches ($3.50) arrives under whipped cream and sprinkles, we chalk it up to sugary silverware. We hope.

Starchy, fibrous yucca in garlic sauce ($3.99) kicks us off pleasantly though, with spoonfuls of the minced, pickled vamp venom lingering on our palates long into the night. But the real star remains the fabulous, piquant mojo sauce on the side, a mix of vinegar, olive oil and lime seasoned with onion, garlic and cilantro, as described to us when we first fell for it at the old location. It also kills atop a quartered, crisp-skinned pollo frito (fried chicken, $9.99), complete with arroz con gandules (sofrito-laced rice with pigeon peas) and mofongo, mashed, fried plantains flecked with crunchy chicharrĂ³n bits (yes please, forever).
