El Paso County Sheriff Bill Elder has competition for his second term in office in the 2018 election.

Mike Angley, a retired Air Force colonel, filed for the office on Aug. 22 as a Republican; no other candidates have yet filed. Angley says he's running because, "The only time I hear EPSO mentioned is in the context of scandal, corruption, collusion and cronyism." He says the remedy is to elect an outsider who's "untainted by political connections there."

Angley says he served 35 years in federal law enforcement, including several overseas deployments, and worked for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. After retirement, he worked for 10 years as a military advisor to the president of Henley-Putnam University in San Jose, California, a strategic security school, and published several thriller novels (mikeangley.com).

He describes himself as "very conservative" and a staunch Second Amendment advocate. He moved to Colorado Springs 12 years ago for an Air Force assignment and later retired. He's 58.

In his run for sheriff, Angley says he wants to "institutionalize integrity, professionalize the force, conduct robust community outreach, and revamp EPSO operations to maximize effectiveness."

He acknowledged that his ground game is getting his name and background known to voters by talking to as many as possible. Asked if he would support extending the 1A special sales tax for the Sheriff's Office, which expires in 2020, Angley says he's aware of its expiration and is studying the issue. If the money is essential to carrying out the mission, he adds, he would support asking voters to extend the tax. See more about Angley at angley4sheriff.org.
