Mipso’s sound may still embrace close harmonies, clawhammer banjo and a Harvest-era Neil Young vibe, but the Chapel Hill, North Carolina quartet’s music has continued to evolve since their college string-band days. In the six years since their 2012 debut album Long, Long Gone, they’ve also distinguished themselves by performing on top of a KFC float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, sharing a dressing room with The Roots’ Questlove, and — most importantly for our purposes — honed their live sound with hundreds of road shows. Their last local appearance was a 2017 Ivywild date as part of the Campfire Caravan tour with fellow indie bands The Brothers Comatose and The Lil Smokies, without whom we can expect a longer set this time out. You can also look forward to new songs from their fourth album Edges Run, which was released this past April on the AntiFragile label. Through it all, the band’s recordings — even with the addition of slide guitar and drums — still manage to top the bluegrass charts. Go figure.
