Re: “The transgender military debate: policy versus culture

@Rene Jax
The numbers of post operative suicides for transgender individuals have been greatly inflated in the past and by groups that are clearly anti-lgbt/transgender. The actual numbers are much closer to the numbers for major post operative surgeries for various issues (hystorectomies, removal of the prostate on men and even post partum suicides after child birth, etc etc etc). The majority of suicides in the transgender community come pre-transition, when the individual is struggling to repress who they are and to be that square peg shoved into the round hole that society demands them to be put into. Most transgender individuals attempt suicide before the age of 18. And the majority are sexually assaulted before they are 21. It is not becuase they recieved treatment.

I can personally vouch for this. I am a combat veteran with multiple tours and deployments overseas. I had massive PTSD and severe Gender Disphoria. It got to a point where while on a deployment to the Middle East in support of the ongoing operations against ISIS, I attempted suicide. I was sent home and placed into treatment. Because I could not tell my medical providers (who where in a military hospital), that I also identified as a woman and not a man, they could not understand why no matter what they did, I simply was not getting better. I was evem sent to the top residential PTSD treatment program in the country. And still it did not help. Finally it slipped that I was transgender and eventually began reviving treatment for it. It was only after I began recieving treatment, was formally recognized as female and began adhering to female uniform wear and grooming standards did I improve. Now two years after attempting suicide down range, I am legally a female, was able to return to my military assignment and began taking on additional jobs of educating about transgender issues to command level leadership, as well as present transgender training. Again, it is not the surgery that causes suicide. It is trying to suppress your own bodies attempt to fix the issue and conform to what society demands you to be.
