There are two Monica’s Taco Shops in town. They’re separate businesses with different recipes and menus, though, amusingly enough, they’ve both outlived the K-Marts with which they share parking lot space. It’s been nearly two decades since we’ve turned a critical eye to the eastern one, so we hit the drive-thru at Rosa Rodriguez’s digs. We pick up a fish tacos plate ($8.08) and a chorizo plate ($8.60) and snag a sample bite before hitting the road.

Consistent with when last we checked in, the two fish tacos come fried in crisp breading with cabbage, pico de gallo and tartar sauce. It’s a refreshing bite with sweet and creamy sauce balancing out the brighter pico and some stinging-hot red salsa with plenty of vinegar, but the fish is a touch dry. So’s the mass of cheese-covered chorizo, also not at all spicy, though the seasoning’s otherwise on point. Both come with creamy beans and good Spanish rice, making each to-go box plenty heavy and a fine dollar value.
