MaiLe and Dan Dreyfuss have expanded Black Forest Pies & Grinders into a new location. A former Borriello Brothers storefront now hosts Monument Pies & Grinders (15910 Jackson Creek Parkway, #120), which opened on Jan. 7 to, in Dan’s words, a line out the door.

“Monument has been extremely supportive to us,” he says. The couple started the original Black Forest spot in 2001, specializing in pizzas and East Coast-style grinders. In 2006, the Dreyfusses had to close down and leave town to deal with an illness in the family, but in 2010, they came back, reopening the spot in 2011.

The two eateries offer the same recipes, but Dan says their Monument location does two things differently: One, they offer pizza by the slice until 4 p.m. daily. Dan says that they’re more of a destination spot in Black Forest, so he doesn’t feel like counting on folks to drop by for a slice is enough to justify that business option, but Monument’s higher foot traffic makes it popular. Two, the Monument location holds a liquor license. They stock a small, rotating selection of bottled beers, ciders and wines, plus White Claw spiked seltzers — think alcoholic La Croix.

Beyond pizza, the spot’s most popular offerings are its cheesesteak and Italian sausage sandwiches. The latter’s made with Palmer Lake-based Sara’s Sausage, and both come on Philadelphia-baked Amoroso’s rolls.

“We [also] sell an inordinate amount of wings for a small pizza place,” says Dan. They’re available with house-made buffalo sauce in mild, medium and hot, plus house garlic Parmesan and spicy barbecue sauces, or store-bought teriyaki and sweet barbecue. Due to popular demand, Dan says he’s looking at bottling his buffalo sauces in the near future.
