Moses Sumney
, Græ (Jagjaguwar) – The pressure was on Moses Sumney since his 2017 debut established him as a premiere falsetto R&B singer. Sumney certainly didn’t go for the ordinary in this new 20-track outing. The opening “Insula” confronts isolation, and the following tracks establish an eerie floating ambience not unlike Childish Gambino’s new psychedelia. If there’s a limitation to this ethereal work, it’s the lack of a hook-filled soul classic, though the love song “Polly” could assume that role.

liar, flower, Geiger Counter (One Little Indian) – KatieJane Garside of Daisy Chainsaw and Chris Whittingham usually record as Ruby Throat, but adopted “liar, flower” for one of 2020’s oddest albums. If the vocals midway between Joanna Newsom and CocoRosie are an acquired taste, the songs themselves careen in fascinating directions, from baroque pop to hard rock.
