Mothers and Great Lake Swimmers with the new and noteworthy

Mothers, Render Another Ugly Method (Anti-) – Kristine Leschper and her Athens, Georgia, quartet‘s complex sophomore album suggests a happier Mothers than we’re used to seeing. While lyrics and guitar progressions are as cryptic as they were on the first album, upbeat tracks like “Fat Chance” find them emerging from dark shadows into a brighter light.

Great Lake Swimmers, The Waves, The Wake (Netwerk) – Like New York’s Liars, this Canadian folk-rock ensemble has narrowed its focus to serve largely as a solo demonstration of frontman Tony Dekker’s talents. The acoustic guitars are gone, leaving shimmering works that suggest a surreal dream-pop. In many ways, it’s a big step forward, but some may miss the crisp mandolin-violin interplay that was previously their trademark.
