'ICHIBAN!” declares Taro Honda when asked if he has a message for the people of Colorado Springs. Ichiban is the Japanese word for, among other things, the number “one.” It’s also the loudest part of the audience chant (“We... are... ichiban!) that Hondo and bandmate Hiroaki Igaki lead during Mugen Hoso’s insanely exuberant live shows, where fans have been inspired to stage-dive at clubs with no stages. Like the earliest punk bands, the Tokyo-based guitar-and-drum duo doesn’t waste time: Their recently released fifth album, Live or Die, offers up seven songs that clock in at less than 18 minutes. It’s also surprisingly diverse, with punk-rock harmonies that recall Mission of Burma, distortion-free guitar riffs, clean vocals, and classic-rock references that range from The Beatles’ “Norwegian Wood” to the “colored-girls” chorus from Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side.” If you’re looking for a bass-free Sunday night pick-me-up, Mugen Hoso should be your No. 1 choice.
