The more adventurous art music listener will not want to miss the free Crosstown Collaboration Concert between Colorado College and UCCS on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Packard Performance Hall. The program will feature new compositions by faculty members of both institutions, and includes a performance of British composer Peter Maxwell Davies’ Eight Songs for a Mad King. Davies’ 1969 work, inspired by the ailing King George III’s attempts to train bullfinches to sing tunes played by a mechanical organ, still seems radical today, featuring extended-range singing, a kaleidoscopic array of percussion, instrumentalists in giant birdcages, and smashed violins.
