I'm a Local Transgender Activist who went political after losing my 22-year career as a Civil Designer as a direct result of anti-Trans discrimination & bigotry. (They should have left well enough alone...) I am one of the ones who helped affect the appropriate changes which now places Colorado quite near the head of the class, when it comes to Transgender-friendly laws and policies. And much to the consternation of the Haters, I am still a solid Christian!

Re: “It's not too late, Mr. Mayor

The problem with Mayor Bach and his Conservative handlers is that they all think if they ignore people that they don't like, that they will just magically disappear. Sort of like trying to wish or even pray the "Gay" away. But you know what? That ain't gonna happen - Not now... Not EVER!

The LGBT people who are being slighted here are good, responsible, tax-paying, law-abiding citizens too. Therefore, understand this key point: One must have totally EQUAL rights before any claims of "special" rights can logically or truthfully ever be leveled against our diverse members of the Community.

And it doesn't take rocket science to know that an inordinate proportion of the subject people groups are exceedingly underserved specifically because of localized de facto discrimination on every hand. (Is there Same-Sex Marriage in Colorado? With every full benefit even to the Federal level? ... I rest my case!)

When the Mayor & Company stand against openly welcoming its oppressed segments of Colorado Springs (even to the tune of making political promises to that effect), they demonstrate that they are woefully derelict in their duties of being there for ALL of the people they have been elected to serve. For they are public SERVANTS - not ruling monarchs!

Not wanting to make an official Proclamation for Pridefest is one thing - but to not openly make it clear that anti-LGBT hatred and violence are unwelcome in this City tacitly says to thugs and other criminals that it's "Open Season" on the people in question here - and that our new Municipal Administration doesn't even acknowledge them as being human beings.

Why is this happening? They are just holding to a backwards-facing agenda of putrifying hatred themselves, cleverly coated in candy-sweet "I'm so innocent"-sounding rhetoric. They are merely following the talking points probably crafted by Focus on the Family's CitizenLink - and we all know it!

Shame on Mayor Bach - and his incompassionate Axis of Evil puppets in City Council!

Re: “Transgender Day of Remembrance on Saturday

Thank you, Ms. Barker, for posting this article - I could not have done better, myself! It is timely, respectful - and so very needful, in light of the shameful unwillingness of much of Society (especially here in Colorado Springs), when it comes to even acknowledging the existence of the Transgender Community. Take it from me: illogical and ignorance-based, Anti-Trans prejudice still runs deep. In my case, I've got major skill-sets that span at least 35 years - and after 18 months including over 533 tries, I am still unemployed. I've seen people with pitifully much less to offer get jobs instead of me. A bad economy isn't always to blame in this. When so-called "decent" people want to get rid of "undesireables", they simply unplug all access to a sustainable life. It's one thing when Society opposes convicted criminals, but when we're talking about LAW-ABIDING citizens who happen to be Transgender, there is something grievously wrong here. Until we see Transphobia utterly vanquished across this land, The American Dream, along with its inalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness has utterly FAILED!

Re: “These beautiful Civilians

I'm surprised that no one else has commented back at you on "This Beautiful City", given some of the questions, remarks and requests for recordings of the Play that went forth during the talk-back sessions which took place after each of the 3 performances. (I was present at all 3 showings).

Despite the bad weather on Sunday, there was nearly a packed house in that new theatre at Colorado College. And as was already stated, reactions to the artistic treatise on the spiritual barometer of Colorado Springs was varied and in some cases contradictory.

On a completely different note:

A number of my friends had come to see if Emily Ackerman's version of me onstage rendered true justice to that most heart-wrenching segment of my life's story. I'm glad to say that without prior cuing, they knew when she was playing "Nancy-Jo" instantly. And some of them were fighting back tears by the end of the song "Urban Planning"... So was I.

It was so moving that during that part of one of the shows, someone yelled out from the back corner of the Auditorium "We love you, Nancy-Jo!"

So at least from that little segment and perspective of "This Beautiful City", the jury of my personal peers have unanimously declared that "The Civilians" definitely got it right!
