New releases from Kalapana and Laura Gibson

Kalapana, Black Sand
  • Kalapana, Black Sand
Kalapana, Black Sand (Kalapana Music) – Hawaii’s soft-rock renegades specialize in a flute-saturated yacht-rock that was popular in the Pacific Rim back in the late ‘70s. With royalty disputes behind them, the band can offer this 20-track retrospective, which includes music not previously available in the U.S. Their earliest songs may be a little sugary at times, but their early-‘80s gems, including tight live cuts, make this album worth the search.

Laura Gibson, Goners
  • Laura Gibson, Goners
Laura Gibson, Goners (Barsuk Records) – Fans of Portland bard Laura Gibson know from 2016’s Empire Builder how well she can meld wistfulness and existential sadness. Gibson’s warm, husky voice suggests Jolie Holland or Jesca Hoop. The new album, Goners, explores a sort of joyful hopelessness in tracks like “Domestication” and “Slow Joke Grin,” while the title track suggests our time is just about up.
