New Tunes

I guess it's one thing to have your music dissected and sampled by other artists on their records, but sampling yourself? That's just what the members of the collective formerly known as Camper Van Beethoven have done. In the ten years since the band broke up, the digital revolution has opened up a whole new way for founders David Lowery, Jonathan Segel and Victor Krummenacher to sit down this past December and take the concept of an "odd & rare" collection of tracks into something truly special. Instead of lining up a grab bag of live recordings, demos, and radio broadcasts and let 'em rip -- the boys huddled down in the new technologies, sampling bits and pieces of these, matching pitch and tempo, layering studio recordings over live ones, and creating new songs in the process. The result is found in the just released Camper Van Beethoven Is Dead, Long Live Camper Van Beethoven set on Pitch-A-Tent Records, and highly recommended. ... News of the recording sessions of the upcoming new Norman Cook / Fatboy Slim album are sneaking out. The word is that Parliament / Funkadelic bassist Bootsy Collins has added live bass to three tracks, as well as Macy Gray contributing vocals to one track. ... As a member of the Grateful Dead family, Vassar Clements performed fiddle on Wake of the Flood, From the Mars Hotel, and Old & In the Way. Now with the Harris Brothers from North Carolina and mandolin master Butch Baldassari, Clements has just released Dead Grass, a collection of 11 Grateful Dead classics in full Bluegrass boogie abandon. Look for it on the Cedar Glen Music Group label. ... What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander -- The Offspring has decided that turnabout is fair play and are now selling "bootleg" Napster logo merchandise on their band's Web site. It's like Negativeland once said -- copyright infringement is your best entertainment value...
