North Slope Recreation Area Opening Day

When: Thu., May 1 2014

Crocuses are blooming, wildflowers are peeking out, and today's the day the North Slope Recreation Area reopens. Crystal Reservoir and the North and South Catamount lakes, which also serve as reservoirs for the Springs, open for fishing — on the banks or in non-gas-powered boats — mountain biking, hiking and picnicking (tell the ants!). The entire recreation area on Pikes Peak (5069 Pikes Peak Highway, Cascade, 385-7325) is your playground. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through May 23 and expanded after that. Admission is $4 per person for 16 and older; young ones get in free. — Robert Meyerowitz
