Jason Chung, aka Nosaj Thing, began performing alongside Flying Lotus and other like-minded experimental artists at weekly gatherings in L.A. nightclub parking lots. From there, the electronic music modulator has gone on to produce tracks for hip-hop royalty like Kendrick Lamar, Kid Cudi and Chance the Rapper, while simultaneously being recruited for remixes by minimalist composer Philip Glass, French chanteuse Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Japanese noise-rock outfit Boris. A number of those elements find their way into Chung’s newly released album Parallels, which opens with looped piano and percussion straight out of the Philip Glass and Steve Reich playbook before venturing into a hypnotic world of glacial synthesizers and ethereal vocals. In his live set, expect to hear the disembodied voices of Blonde Redhead’s Kazu Makino and Bob Marley’s granddaughter Zuri, both of whom feature on the album, submerged in a set of dance-worthy 808 rhythms and trance-inducing electronics.
