Odyssey Gastropub co-owners Jenny Schnakenberg and Tyler Sherman have announced a new restaurant concept that they’re hoping to open in late December or early January. It’s called The Bench (424 S. Nevada Ave.), and it’s taking the place of the Garrison Tavern.

“Odyssey has been a tremendous success,” says Schnakenberg. “We’re very thankful for where we’re at there.” And while Odyssey’s going to maintain its course, The Bench will be more of an elevated sports bar, something she felt downtown Springs lacks.

But she says it’s going to be more than neon signs, jerseys and football. The spot will be focusing thematically and content-wise on local sports, including bicycling and running.

As for a menu, Schnakenberg says they’ve nailed down the theme but plan to work with their not-yet-hired chef on the specifics. They are, however, planning on offering more beers than they do at Odyssey — Schnakenberg says they’re eyeing a 10-tap system, with an additional 50 to 75 offerings available by bottle or can.

“We’d like to keep the focus on small-batch local places as well as options you can’t find everywhere in town while keeping it rotating and interesting,” she says.

She adds that extensive renovations on the 3,000-square-foot space have already begun. In late 2016, Garrison Tavern appeared on the Spike TV reality show Bar Rescue.
