Ohmme, Fantasize Your Ghost (Joyful Noise) – The fact that Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart collaborate with everyone from Chance the Rapper to Wilco shows how hard they are to pigeonhole. In their second album, they offer the harmonies of trios such as I’m With Her, but layer an eclectic progressive rock on top of the compositions, so one is never sure where Ohmme will head next. The opener “Flood Your Gut” carries hints of Robert Fripp, while “3 2 4 3” plays with time signatures enough to make the head spin. An exciting time is guaranteed.

Mark Olson and Ingunn Ringvold, Magdalen Accepts the Invitation (Fiesta Red Records) – Who would have guessed that a founder of The Jayhawks would front a duo that tried to bring back the spirit of Incredible String Band or Renaissance? Thanks go to Olson’s wife, the vocalist and Mellotron musician Ringvold, who contributes an otherworldly fantasy aura to the 10 tracks. It carries the feel of an enchanted Druid glen, and if that seems a little too magical for these sober times, remember that an entire genre of twee music was built around just such flights of fancy.
