June 23 marked the 70th Olympic Day, celebrating the modern Olympic Games which began June 23, 1894. Olympic Day is now celebrated by millions in 160 countries, including over four million in 2017, according to the United States Olympic Committee. The Olympic Day mission is to promote fitness, well-being, culture and education, while promoting the Olympic values of excellence friendship and respect.

Here in the Springs, Olympic City, USA, Olympic Day meant a mayoral proclamation and cauldron lighting, free entry and tours of the Olympic Training Center and the opportunity to meet Team USA athletes. One athlete present was Lauren Gibbs, brakeman for the women's bobsled team that took silver in Pyeongchang last February.

"It was an honor, obviously, to compete for Team USA and to medal, but I think it was equally an honor to meet other Team USA athletes, meet athletes from other countries and experience the camaraderie that is the Olympics," Gibbs says in an interview.

Before lighting the cauldron, Colorado Springs Mayor, John Suthers, read a proclamation which highlighted the Olympic achievements of building a more peaceful and better world, educating through athletics and forging new relationships bound in fair play.

"The United States Olympic Committee is dedicated to coordinating and developing amateur athletic activity in the United States to foster productive working relationship among sports-related organizations," read Suthers. The proclamation says Colorado Springs promotes amateur Olympic and Paralympic sports, physical fitness and participation through organization and program development.
