Re: “Springs in the spotlight

Breaking news is always challenging for the media, especially on the weekend. Local TV producers could have done several things to advance the story. First, don't accept a newsfeeding, uh I mean news briefing from the authorities without checking it out further. The cops said 3 to 5 people were taken to hospitals. Well, which was it, 3, 4 or 5? The PIO could have easily confirmed the number. Second, media reports not only contained no new info on the victims, I had to learn from CNN how many people were taken to Penrose Main and what their conditions were. I first learned the name of the shooter from CNN and not local media reports. I first learned that the shooter was responsible for both church shootings from CNN and not the local media. The only local scoop I saw was KKTV confirming that a search was being conducted of a home in Englewood, possibly connected to the case. When a CNN producer can pick up a phone and get more details than the local media, who should have better contacts, that shows that more training is necessary.
