Penrose-St. Francis Health Services announced July 14 it has finalized the purchase of the 28.5-acre lot on which Martin Marietta Materials Inc. asphalt plant is located. The tract, northeast of Centennial Boulevard and Fillmore Street, lies adjacent to the 51.5-acre site of Penrose's planned $550 million medical campus, Penrose said in a release.

The added space allows architects more latitude in design options, the release said. Originally planned to be much taller, the new hospital will be no more than 165 feet as a result of working with 19 homeowners associations in the vicinity. Penrose also is spending $102 million to expand St. Francis Medical Center, located at 6001 E. Woodmen Road, by adding more room in the emergency department, operating rooms and the neonatal intensive care unit. The main Penrose Hospital on North Cascade Avenue will eventually become an outpatient facility also used by oncology and radiology; it also will maintain an emergency room.
