Penrose-St. Francis Health Services laid off 42 people from its Colorado Springs facilities on May 15, days after its acting CEO said the health system would rethink building a multi-story hospital on Fillmore Street.

Penrose spokesman Chris Valentine says via email the layoff comprises "less than two percent" of the workforce and is part of a "new staffing model" that aims to "increase efficiency of operations and position ourselves for the vibrant growth." Services will not be affected at Penrose Hospital or St. Francis Medical Center, he said.
