“We’ve had so many kind responses,” says manager Shirley Kell, who’s been with the company for a year and a half. “We’ve got the formula down. We’re in the people business, and second, we’re in the coffee business.”

The spot brews the same Pikes Perk beans used at the original location, and the menu’s all but identical. One difference: The Johnsons have not sought a liquor license for the Mountain Shadows location. Kell says they’re open to the idea, but only if it’s what the neighborhood wants. They’re interested first and foremost in acting as a community gathering space, hosting group events and meetups. When we speak, Kell says they might try hosting hiking and biking meetups come summertime, taking advantage of nearby Ute Valley Park and Blodgett Peak Open Space. Kell says they’re open to music, mostly acoustic and softer, but they’re more interested in featuring area visual artists on their walls.
