"This is history in the making,” declared Pitbull at the onset of his 2016 Grammy Awards performance with Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, Blink-182’s Travis Barker and the no-less-talented Robin Thicke. Whether or not that was true — Pitbull seemed pretty convinced it was — the performance clearly hasn’t dented the reputation that the flamboyant Reggaeton rapper earned with chart-topping singles like “I Know You Want Me,” “Timber” and “Give Me Everything.”

A one-time protégé of Crunk godfather Lil Jon, the Miami-born Armando Christian Pérez reinvented himself as a pop artist with 2011’s
Planet Pit, which featured guest appearances by Kelly Rowland, Marc Anthony and Enrique Iglesias. And the legacy lives on. In 2017, Pérez released Pitbull Greatest Hits, his fourth compilation album to date.

Last year, he delivered a rendition of Toto’s “Africa” that overflowed with the kind of rhymes (“From ocean to ocean, sea to sea / I’m something that you gotta see”) that Shaggy 2 Dope would kill for. Meanwhile, the video for the current single “Slowly Slowly,” which finds the 38-year-old rapper grinding hips poolside with Bollywood icons Guru Randhawa and Bhushan Kumar, has just surpassed 150 million views.

“Can’t stop me now,” Pérez vowed a decade ago on the single of the same name. Love him or hate him, you know it’s true.
