Playing Around: Marty Jones and the Pork Boilin Poor Boys

It's been called everything from "bluegrassabilly" to "bashgrass." The boys in the band refer to it as "drunkytonk." But one thing's for sure: This ain't your daddy's hillbilly music. And it's not your average smilin' Brooks and Dunn stuff either. With a huge dose of irreverent humor -- beginning with their name -- Marty Jones and the Pork Boilin' Poor Boys offer up a sound that is something like hillbilly bop crossbred with traditional bluegrass, soaked in whiskey and front porch blues.

If you haven't heard of Marty Jones & the Pork Boilin' Poor Boys, here's a quick primer. They've been a part of the Colorado music-scape since 1997. They've packed clubs and headlined shows in almost every live dive venue in the state. More recently they've been hitting some of the larger, regional festivals, opening for fellow hillbilly peers, like Mojo Nixon and Big Sandy. On stage the instruments you'll see and hear consist of a vintage washtub bass, a harmonica, a rhythm guitar, an electric mandolin (homemade) and an old set of drums. They released a CD in 1999, which has been getting solid airplay on college radio stations around the country.

But most impressively, and importantly, they are the only band in the nation sponsored by the Chattanooga Bakery, which, incidentally, is the maker of that delectable Southern chocolate, marshmallow, caramel and nut treat known as the MoonPie.

A MoonPie is something everyone should experience at least once in a lifetime. So if you've never had a MoonPie, now's your chance. They're handed out at every show. As MJ himself likes to point out, "They're the perfect match for our brand of souped-up roots music... and go well with a thoughtfully chosen craft beer, too."

Well, you heard the man. So don your straw hat, shit kickers and piece of hay and head to the Acoustic Coffee Lounge for a beer, or a Brev, and MoonPie.
