Playing Around: Pikes Peak Folk Festival

Whether or not you've seen A Mighty Wind -- Christopher Guests send-up of a 60s folk reunion -- the temptation to go to the Pikes Peak Folk Festival this weekend in Divide just to ogle the gathering of people who would so brazenly call themselves folkies is irresistible. No doubt, the monikers got a bad rap. I mean, Woody Guthrie, The Carter Family and Dock Boggs are just as important in the history of American music as any Miles Davis or Robert Johnson. And surely this wont be a soft-focus pony-tail party when you've got the likes of Hot Club of Cowtown, Mariachi Nuevo Rio Grande, the McLemore Family, Duke Davis and Buckshot, Bill Barwick and special guest Jennifer Hanson (see photo above) on the bill. Were talking about everything from bluegrass to western and folk music styles here. Now that Michael Martin Murphys WestFest is gone, this should whet your appetite for finger pickin' licks galore. Lots of western vendors, artisans, food and children's activities will be on hand.
