Alan Joseph, with his band Cedars Cigars and Jazz Club, 3125 Sinton Road Every Friday and Saturday, except June 9 and 10 call 578-5744 for more.

Like the sun rising and setting, or death and taxes, Alan Joseph has performed with his band at Cedars Cigars and Jazz Club every Friday and Saturday night for the last two years but not this weekend. The eclectic group has been upstaged by the fourth annual Nocturnal Mockery, an art exhibit (see page 34).

The bump, however, is not a statement about their popularity. Joseph says the band, which also features keyboardist and vocalist Jana Lee, draws a large enough audience to make it worthwhile. He adds that the longevity of the jazz night a rarity in Colorado Springs is due to the diversity of the music.

"We tend to represent all styles of improvised music and jazz," he says. "We can run the gamut, from straight swing and bebop, to more eclectic groove stuff, like Medeski Martin & Wood. ... We get older people who want to dance and younger people who want to groove."

Joseph is an accomplished musician whose Heavy Water Music was voted No. 1 jazz album by KRCC 91.5 FM a few years back, and also earned him national attention in Guitar Player and Guitar magazines. He's also a guitar instructor at University of Denver.

After the art show is down and he returns to Cedars, he will be joined by a very special guest bassist for performances on June 16, 17, 23 and 24. You can count on that.
