  • Woodshed Red has become a Porch Fest staple.
It’s been a cool 50 years since true musical auteur Tiny Tim dueted with himself for the rousing number “On the Old Front Porch” (yes, it was a cover, but currently no one alive remembers any previous performances). Fortunately, you can still live the dream of lounging about on a porch while music fills the air at the third annual Patty Jewett Porch Fest on Sept. 9.

Past installments of the kid-friendly, food-filled affair have featured musical guests such as Mike Clark, Tejon Street Corner Thieves, Tribe, and Lost Luggage. This year, attendees can look forward to afternoon performances by Clem Hammond and the B3s — the mysterious blues collective who look suspiciously like Joe Johnson and his co-conspirators, though all involved continue to plead the fifth — as well as long-running roots reggae act Be Positive and reigning champs Woodshed Red, who have appeared at each year’s event. For the full schedule, check the Patty Jewett Neighborhood Association on Facebook.

Rounding out the rest of the week, one mustn’t forget the Pikes Peak Center’s hosting 311 on Tuesday, Sept. 11. Possibly the only band to have earned a triple-platinum album while also deriving their name from the Omaha Police Department’s code for indecent exposure, 311 needs little introduction, with their albums hovering near the top of the charts for the better part of a decade.

Finally, here’s one for the country crowd. Texas-based singer-songwriter Josh Ward will hit the Black Sheep stage on Wednesday, Sept. 12, joined by fellow Texas Southern rockers Jay Statham & The Tokie Show.

Ward, whose pre-music career efforts moved from “a drifter’s adolescence to the jeopardous game of the rodeo circuit to the punishing toil of the Texas oil fields,” released his fourth LP, More Than I Deserve, in May 2018, following six radio singles that hit the top spot on the Texas Regional Radio Charts and an extended stint touring with singer-songwriter Cody Johnson.

Between Ward’s seemingly unshakable regional hitmaking, appealing synthesis of classic country balladry with Dwight Yoakam-esque neo-honky tonk, and relentless tour schedule, his career looks to be on a steady upward trajectory, so country and roots music fans, be sure to catch him while he’s in town.
