Members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band responded in different ways when the group signed last year to Seattle’s grunge-identified Sub Pop Records. One of the youngest members, saxophonist Clint Maedgen, was totally thrilled, having ridden in the trunk of a friend’s car to see Mudhoney back in 1989.

Fellow hornman Charlie Gabriel, who recently turned 87, was characteristically nonplussed, while bassist and creative director Ben Jaffe, who took over the reins from his father back in the mid-’90s, saw it as another step in the evolution of a New Orleans jazz band that’s collaborated with The Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Dr. John and The Blind Boys of Alabama.

The band is currently touring to promote its Tuba to Cuba documentary and soundtrack, while extending a legacy that dates back to the release of their first album 55 years ago. Conventional wisdom has it that nothing lasts forever, but the Preservation Hall Jazz Band may prove otherwise.
