No news is bad news. Honest journalism is attacked daily by the Trump administration, and the economic shutdown brought by the coronavirus pandemic has been devastating for the nation’s news operations — including the Indy’s.

The Colorado Springs Indy has been the alternative voice in Colorado Springs for almost three decades. We’ve brought you news that goes deeper than a sound bite, and balanced and thorough coverage of community and environmental concerns. We’ve introduced you to diverse, inclusive voices, and provided a platform for artists and musicians, as well as a place to explore food and culture.

Now, more than ever, we need your support to continue to provide independent, free, locally owned journalism to our readers.

Small businesses like the Indy are reeling as the coronavirus spreads. Many have laid off workers; others have shuttered their doors. Most will be back after all this is over — but a few will be gone for good, leaving a huge hole in Colorado Springs.

But the Indy will keep fighting the good fight.  Even now, we’re searching for innovative ways to bring you the news. We’ve created a daily email blast where we provide the latest information about COVID-19. Sign up at csindy.com. Readership has increased across all our platforms; and now you can subscribe to the Indy and get it at home. (Every week, we’ll feature things to watch, listen to and read as we all self-isolate.)

We haven’t laid off workers or reduced hours — at least not yet. We’ve maintained health insurance benefits. We’ve even hired to beef up our digital and events offerings; we’re ready to lead from the front.

We’re committed to being here for the long term. We’re committed to continuing to provide courageous, independent journalism, the kind not produced in corporate newsrooms. We are committed to keeping our high journalistic standards and to bringing you stories from around the region — speaking truth to power, comforting the afflicted, sharing ways you can help your neighbors and strengthen our community.

The Indy has been accepting donations and we appreciate every one. We want you to know that you are keeping local journalism alive. So if real news is important to you, please support the Indy. Starting next week, readers can visit csindy.com and lend a hand. And remember, independent journalism takes courage … but it also takes the support of a community. Thank you for yours.
