Sunday, July 22, at the Black Sheep should be of particular interest to local music fans. The evening’s lineup features a diverse assortment of bands on an extensive collective tour, including the Michigan-based Citizen, Philadelphia’s Queen of Jeans, Los Angeles’ Teenage Wrist and New York’s Oso Oso.

Headliners Citizen, whose members hail from both Michigan and Ohio, have been described with an array of genre tags — emo, shoegaze, post-hardcore, punk — though guitarist Nick Hamm says he simply considers the group to be “a rock band.” Whatever you want to call it, their sound has clearly won them fans, as evidenced by their sophomore album Everybody Is Going to Heaven charting at No. 2 on Billboard’s Vinyl Albums chart. The band’s latest LP, As You Please, was released in late 2017 on Run for Cover Records.

Queen of Jeans, meanwhile, may be a familiar set of faces for locals, as they put on a memorable performance at the Black Sheep in May of last year. The band’s self-described “denimcore” sound is rather ethereal and dreamy, but not lacking in ’60s pop hooks, as evidenced on their engaging new LP Dig Yourself. The group recently received notice from Billboard, who praised them as “the band you didn’t know you were missing” and premiered their new music video, “U R My Guy,” which pays homage to and slyly subverts a scene from the late-’90s romcom 10 Things I Hate About You. Check out the video, then go catch them and their tourmates before they’re selling out stadiums.
