Re: “Focusing on evolution

Well now, there's something that turns me off from official Christianity -- swallow it whole or not at all. Okay, not at all. Genesis is full of self-contradictions due to there having been more than one author of that book. Don't believe me? Check out "Who Wrote the Bible" by Richard Elliott Friedman (HarperCollins 1989, right around 300 pages including maps). There's an adage about not being so open minded as to lose one's brains. A similar thing can be said about faith, as in don't be so faithful that shysters can take you for a ride. I'm pretty sure that's where Ranger Rich is coming from. A person can have faith in God and still resist being a fool. Regarding ID (Intelligent Design), consider this: God either existed before the universe or has always existed with the universe. Now if one goes on the assumption that God existed first and that the universe did indeed have a beginning, then intelligence itself was created along with the universe. Ergo, God does not have intelligence but something far beyond that concept -- the ability to create intelligence. If you think about this even farther, it would be impossible for God to have created man in His own image, at least not physically. Ask youself this: Why would God need a mouth, eyes, ears, alimentary canal, arms and legs? We need that stuff to survive until we die, being mortals. Intelligence also helps us survive, an important observation. By definition, God is immortal. Immortals don't need structures for survival, nor do they need intelligence. This is not to say that God is stupid, far from it. We cannot understand how God could have created intelligence through using our intelligence. It's beyond our ken. Of course all thinking can be brushed aside with God magic. If that works for you, fine. It doesn't work for me, nor apparaently does it work for RR. Meanwhile we (RR and I) have faith. Go figure. Maybe we don't have to understand God or pretend that we do. Then the idea heads into love and the nature of that, which we can understand but not through intelligence. That's something different and must be felt, very much like faith. Yep, and then how the universe started, or if it had ever started, becomes a meaningless curiosity. That's because the faith isn't based on ancient texts but on the here and now reality. It's not an exercise in thinking but in feeling, which can be mighty painful. Thinking might hurt too, but not in the same way. You can sleep it away. That doesn't happen for love pain. On the upside, love joy is way better than sex or drugs. The Bible got that one right.
