Reader: Buying an iPhone doesn't help the LGBTQ community

I am writing in response to the Aug. 9 Indy's Queer & There column. [Keeley] Griego encourages the LGBTQ community and its allies to support businesses that are LGBTQ-friendly and to avoid those that are not. She uses the example of Apple, a company that supported marriage equality and has "expanded their employee heath insurance policy to cover gender confirmation surgery." While both actions are laudable, tech companies like Apple tend to be notoriously white, male and wealthy.

To put this in perspective, 2017 has been one of the deadliest years for transgender Americans (to date, 16 have been murdered) particularly those of color.

Patronizing businesses that support the LGBTQ community may be symbolically nice, but single-payer health care is the only way to ensure that ALL Americans get the care they deserve.

Buying an iPhone does not help the LGBTQ community, organizing and advocating for better health care policy does.
