Reader: Clean energy is too important for our future to give to capitalists

Good to see Colorado Springs utilizing more solar [The Wire: "Springs Utilities to power 30,000 more homes with solar," July 23]. It's one of the future energy sources as we pull away from fossil fuels. Sadly, though, the government isn't spearheading solar use throughout the country, instead allowing countless companies to get in on the act (under the guise of "innovation" and free enterprise), resulting in higher fees for users and an ineffectual implementation of alternative energy sources.

The federal government should have a program similar to NASA during the 1960s, devoted to nothing but clean energy — solar in this instance. Hire scientists and put them to work on solar, with the goal of having a plan for the entire nation to be solar in 10 years, for example.

Don't worry about profit margins, Wall Street or elite corporations who want in on the act. Once solar is made affordable, then the government could regulate it and install it wherever it can, free of charge to citizens. Clean energy is too important for our future to hand it over to a bunch of capitalists whose main purpose is to make money at any cost, costs usually passed on to the true workers of America.
