Reader: Demand a return to "regular order"

Letters

President Trump promised to unify this country, and many Americans voted for him while clinging to the hope created by that promise. Instead, the president seems to thrive on divisive language and hate-mongering, walking a very thin line between patriotic fervor and overt racism.

Puerto Rico has been without power and water for over a week, yet the president finds it is so difficult to reach, he has to go golfing instead. (Trump explained the immense logistical problem Puerto Rico presents: "This is an island surrounded by water, big water, ocean water." Yeah. Thanks for that clarification.)

The shooting in Las Vegas is almost too terrible to think about. I realize Vegas is "landlocked — surrounded by a desert," but if I were an elected official, I would have already BEEN to Puerto Rico to lend support to the people suffering there, and would be headed to Nevada.

In the wake of Sunday's tragedy, I have seen numerous pleas on social media for the U.S. to finally get serious about comprehensive gun control laws. But we have a president who glorifies and vows to uphold the Second Amendment.

We tend, as a country, to be lackadaisical when it comes to voting, but the 2018 midterms are too important. In the time we have left before those critical elections, we have to rally and excite people about voting. Get Out the Vote, Rock the Vote— do whatever you need to, but be motivated and motivate others to vote as well. Things cannot continue as they have this year. The psyche of the American public can only withstand chaos for so long. Demand, in the words of Sen. John McCain, a return to "regular order." That order will come through free elections in 2018, unsullied by the influence of foreign powers or threatening tweets. I'm an optimist. I still believe that together, we CAN make a difference.
