One of my favorite parts of the Indy is the DiverseCity column, and especially the articles by Patience Kabwasa. Last week's piece on the leaders of the Hillside Neighborhood was no exception. However, I want to acknowledge the importance of then-Parks Director Nancy Lewis, who had to work hard to overcome community resistance to the idea, and found the creative financial mechanism to make it happen. It's difficult to quantify the many ways Nancy contributed to our community, and its legacy of parks and open spaces for all. She should also be remembered for championing Therapeutic Recreation Services. I had the honor of serving on the Parks Board under Nancy's leadership and it was one of the most rewarding experiences of my civic life.

Additionally, I want to thank Pam Zubeck for the recent article on local fire response and underlining less stringent demands on developers in Banning Lewis. Several months ago, I was at an event at the Fine Arts Center where an elderly gentleman collapsed, and 911 was called. It was almost 20 minutes before they arrived. When I asked one of the firefighters why it had taken so long, knowing how close Station 2 is to the FAC, she responded that 2 was on a call and they had been sent from 19. Thanks to your map, I now understand how far that was. Fortunately, there were a couple of doctors in the audience so the gentleman did receive some care until firefighters arrived.

Please consider this also a long overdue thanks for so many excellent articles about our very unique community.
