Reader: I have no idea why I expected rationality in America today

While I will more than likely never be incarcerated, this is absolutely terrifying ("The plight of trans prisoners in Colorado," Queer & There, Jan. 9) and my top fear of being a trans woman in today's society.

I was hoping whenever I Googled "transgender in jail" I would see plentiful articles saying trans people are jailed with the gender they identify with ... and I have no idea why I expected rationality in America today.

The prison system has to know by now that if a transgender person is incarcerated with people of their birth sex there are going to be HUGE problems with sexual harassment and other forms of abuse. While this article is overall dealing with a different situation, I can't help being even more terrified now of leaving my home (and I'm already terrified ofdoing that).

My heart truly goes out to this cis woman and all of the transgender people wrongfully jailed in facilities of the opposite gender they identify as.
