Reader: It's amazing how far we still have to go

Letters

Such an important read. We watched the documentary Free CeCe! in my queer studies class, about a black trans woman wrongfully convicted of manslaughter when in reality it was self defense from a hateful bigoted man who attacked her outside a bar. Not only was she wrongfully convicted, but she was placed in a men's prison in solitary confinement (basically torture) "for her own safety" and forced to wear different clothing from the other inmates, again "for her own safety."

Laverne Cox, the black trans woman on Orange Is the New Black, advocated for her release and visited her in prison for the documentary, where she talked about how shows and media like OITNB make us wrongfully think that trans women are placed in the prison corresponding with their gender identity. Not to mention the number of times trans women are singled out and arrested. Not too long ago it was legal to arrest trans women for female impersonation. What the hell? It's amazing how far we still have to go. I'm always amazed how the media care when it's a white cis woman. This country refuses to see minorities (in race, sexuality or gender identity) as fully human.
