Reader: Keep any and all safe bike infrastructure

To Colorado Springs’ mayor and Council: As a new father, employee at SRAM (the world’s second-largest bicycle component manufacturer), bicycle rider, volunteer bicycle advocate, and resident of the Westside near downtown, I applaud the efforts of your traffic engineering team for presenting these roadway improvements that will greatly enhance the quality of life for the residents and well as people traveling through the Old North End neighborhood (“Old North End to see traffic-flow changes,” The Wire, Jan. 30). To me Cascade has been the clear choice for an on-street bicycle route through downtown, and now this plan will provide a crucial connection to the new bike lanes that were installed on Cascade last year.

Once implemented this will provide bicyclists with much-needed safe, continuous, on-street routes into and through downtown Colorado Springs while also providing safer roads for drivers and pedestrians who live or just travel through the neighborhood. Above that, this will allow me to live the lifestyle I want with my family. I choose to use my bicycle for transportation as much as possible and these safe routes through the bikeable portions of our city will allow me to continue safely riding bikes with my son as well.

I would urge all city officials to keep any and all of the safe bike infrastructure that has been recently implemented in the core of our city as well as work with neighborhoods to build new, safe bike infrastructure in the surrounding areas. These types of improvements that cater to people, not just cars, are what will bring our city to the next level and attract the younger workforce that we are looking for.
