Reader: Not Nicoletta

Letters

The Independent failed its readers by neglecting to do your homework before endorsing Nicole Nicoletta for mayor in Manitou Springs.

Combined with the massive outlay for glossy mailings and phone calls paid for by a dark-money organization, the Colorado Centrist Project Election Fund, the Independent endorsement could doom Manitou to another term of an autocratic, manipulative mayor.

The Pikes Peak Bulletin has reported extensively on the divisive tactics of Mayor Nicoletta, who if re-elected, will be beholden to a Denver-based Political Action Committee spending unknown amounts to buy elections across the state.

Nicoletta imposed no-tolerance law enforcement the police publicly opposed as overly harsh and ineffective; she prohibits public comment on business items at Council sessions; she circumvented our historic preservation process to expedite demolition of historic infrastructure; she routinely bullies residents by name from the podium as well as in her newspaper column; and she routinely ignores the guidance of volunteer community boards established to help guide our city.

More, she has no previous experience to suggest she has the skills to tackle a backlog of infrastructure projects and ensure our city's long-term financial health.

In contrast, her opponent Ken Jaray is a trained lawyer and mediator committed to empowering the citizens of our community. He served as our city's legal counsel as well as on the Manitou Springs School Board. He has assembled teams of residents to restore Fountain Creek and our mineral springs, and works with a fund to invest in local startup companies.

Ken doesn't need two years to get "up to speed." He will lead our community from day one. His grassroots campaign is knocking on 1,000 doors to understand the real needs of our residents. That is why I am proud to join six former mayors in supporting Ken Jaray as our next mayor.

— Aimee Cox, Former Manitou Springs City Council member
