Reader: Our militia is clearly out of control

In the wake of the recent shooting in Florida I've once again, as many of us have, found myself thinking about this whole issue of gun violence in America. It's a problem with many components, and I think there are lots of opportunities to find common ground on issues like mental health, or violence in the media. However, I'm going to offer my thoughts on the most contentious one. The regulation of firearms.

It seems to me that more people need to actually read the ENTIRE Second Amendment to further a realistic discussion about possible gun regulation. It states: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." The gun lobby keeps the public discussion focused on the last half; "the right of the people to keep and bear arms..." and willfully ignores the beginning of the sentence.

To me the amendment is clearly about the establishment of a militia. This implies that all gun owners (of which I am one) are part of that militia. What kind of militia? A well regulated one, because we as gun owners have a duty to help provide for the security of a free state. Thus when it becomes increasingly frequent that one of our militia members walks into a school, or concert, or movie theater, or night club, and indiscriminately kills people, this militia is clearly out of control and should expect some additional regulation in order to insure the security of the people.

In my view, if groups like the NRA want to parade themselves as the defender of the Second Amendment, they need to defend the whole thing.
