Reader: The gentrification blues

Letters

The push to get rid of homeless sights (and sites) seems to come from the desire to turn South Nevada and the areas radiating out from the southwest end of town into a tourist mecca. What we're really trying to do here is turn the city into a place like Aspen or Breckenridge, where the less-than-wealthy are pushed out of pictures we try to make.

I also find myself wondering if many people who are homeless want to live rough because the only meaningful relationship they have is with a pet and there seem to be few places where they can have those pets and still access "services."

The Romans had public baths and toilets more than 2,000 years ago, we ought to have the engineering to solve the problem. There are developing nations working on the question and refugee camps around the world with the same issues.

The ideas must be out there.
