Reader: The marijuana madness is over, legalize it

California legalized medical cannabis way back in 1996, 22 years ago ("Pot holes," Letters, Aug. 22). In truth, recreational consumers never had trouble getting a cannabis card and have been able to obtain herb easily. California officially legalized recreational cannabis in November 2016. Retail sales of recreational cannabis went legal Jan. 1, 2018.

Over 22 years of cannabis legalization, and lo and behold California is by far the largest economic engine in the U.S. and just went from being the sixth-largest economy to the fifth-largest economy in the world.

California is a world leader in aerospace, high technology, agriculture, video and musical entertainment media and tourism. We host headquarters for numerous international corporate giants like Apple, Intel, Netflix, Paypal, Tesla, Oracle, Google, Yahoo, Disney and Advanced Micro Devices to name just some. An average of over 250 million tourists visit California annually, spending over $130 billion and providing well over a million jobs. Other than that, in California we're just stoned slow and lazy.

The madness is over. Legalize, regulate and tax recreational cannabis!
