Reader: Trump's not worthy of military respect

Trump's actions are the latest in a long line of offenses to our military. Many of us have spent years in the military, (me 27 years). We have buried our friends, taken a knee, written condolence letters to parents of fallen soldiers, and visited our limbless soldiers in hospital. The average young company commander or first sergeant would have handled the situation with Sgt. La David T. Johnson's family better and with greater leadership and sensitivity than our sitting president, the "leader" of the free world. Just let that sink in for a moment.

We in the military have always held our leaders to a high standard. President Trump, however, is a man of low standards, so we will treat him as a leader with low standards deserves to be treated, and how soldiers have done for a millennium. We'll ignore him, hold him in contempt, and when we can get away with it we will disrespect him.

Current soldiers need to follow rules and regulations and respect the office of the president, but as veterans, we will exercise our full rights under the U.S. Constitution to speak out against his lack of leadership and incompetence as Commander-in-Chief, and against those that enable his leadership style.
