Reader: Vote carefully

There was a time when the Republican Party was run by responsible conservatives, favoring slow, cautious changes to policies as opposed to liberals who saw more major flaws in the system and pushed for faster and more major change.

But in recent years, the Republican Party got gobbled up and taken over by the tea party, led by a xenophobic megalomaniac named Trump. His chaotic "brand" of policy-making has converted the White House into the Madhouse.

The Republican-tea party is the party of guns. The National Rifle Association's stands and political influence have made America into a shooting gallery with most Republicans meekly taking donations from the NRA amid the gunfire, and refusing to accept even the most reasonable gun controls.

As Democratic Colorado Gov. Hickenlooper said, one can't imagine a way to weaken a nation more than to make its children afraid to go to school.

The Republican Party is the party of the rich. It's the party of "trickle-down economics," which never trickles down. Republicans want to weaken controls on banks (see Dodd-Frank) risking the return to conditions that triggered the Great Recession, with bankers making reckless investments knowing their mistakes will be covered by taxpayers bailing them out, like last time — they were "too big to fail."

Trump says the media are the enemy of the people. Dead wrong. The media are the best defense of the people, seeking and reporting facts. The Republican Party is the enemy of the people.

We have the chance this June and November to partially correct this with our votes. Consider the issues well. Vote carefully.
